Interview with DEVIL'S POISON

Welcome to FILTHY DOGS OF METAL Webzine.

Last time we talked was almost 5 years ago, when you released your album ''Street Metal Attack''. Now you're about to drop your third full-length titled Sex and Metal. Tell us a bit about this project.
Greetings Stavros! Black Goat Sodomizer answering your interrogation. Yes, it's been a while! Lots of Metal, booze, live shows, trips, recordings, fights, and street dramas in these years following the Street Metal Attack album. Sex and Metal is our third full-length record, and without a doubt, it's the rawest, dirtiest, and most energetic one we've done. It stays true to Devil’s Poison roots — punk attitude, metallic riffs, and pure street violence — but with a more mature sound and tighter compositions. We recorded it in the cold southern lands of Coyhaique with Javier Alvarez "War N Hell" and it was mixed/mastered in Valdivia by Osman Zabaleta. This album reflects our true identity: filthy rock and roll with no compromises. We’ve just released our brand-new single “Satanic Metal Attack” along with an official lyric video on YouTube. It delivers a raw and intense dose of blackened speed metal — a clear statement of what Devil’s Poison is all about. This track sets the tone for what’s coming in our upcoming full-length “Sex and Metal,” to be released on July 1st via Rotten Leather Prods. At the same time, we’ve unleashed a new live cassette titled “For Satan your soul… for Devil’s Poison your cunt”, also through Rotten Leather. It captures the chaotic and filthy energy of one of our recent live rituals and serves as a raw prelude to the new album. Check them out and prepare for total sonic devastation!

The cover art has a filthy and sick atmosphere! Tell us some details about it.
The cover was made by Julian Mora from Colombia. He perfectly captured the filth, lust, and aggression that runs through the whole album. It's an homage to the sleaziest underground aesthetic — think Venom, Celtic Frost, Midnight, and those VHS/VCD movie posters you’ll never find on Netflix. We wanted something that screamed Sex and Metal at first glance — and he nailed it.

What can you tell us about the lyrics?
The lyrics talk about what we live and breathe: street life, lust, rebellion, power, and damnation. It's raw and provocative, just like the music. We never censor ourselves — it’s about being real, wild, and setting everything on fire. You’ll hear tales of excess, strength, and the eternal flame of Satanic Metal! We're three demons who have given our body and soul to Demonic Metal, and our lyrics reflect that reality. There's no other path. This is a one-way trip.

How did the collaboration with Rotten Leather Prods come about?
Our bond with Rotten Leather Prods goes way back to around 2016/2017, during the days of our EP Evil Metal Attack and Possessed by Lust and Fire. We were already discussing a potential release with them, and it finally materialized with our first full-length Street Metal Attack in 2020. In 2023, Rotten Leather was also responsible for our first tour in Colombia and Ecuador, with Freddy (the label owner) acting as our tour manager. We got to see many cities, meet great people, and even share the stage with his band Alcoholic Force — killer live act! After spending several days with him on that tour, our bond grew stronger. It felt natural to work together again, so when we started recording this new album, everything flowed quickly and we sealed the deal to release it under Rotten Leather. We fully recommend this label — 666% serious and committed.

What are the differences between Power of Darkness (Blasphemous Rumours) and Sex and Metal?
Power of Darkness was darker, with a cursed atmosphere — more occult, reflecting some intense personal experiences. After the release of SMA in 2020, I was declared clinically dead and spent months in the hospital. That near-death experience needed to be expressed in the music, and you can feel that darkness in the tone and writing. Sex and Metal, on the other hand, is more energetic and rock and roll-driven. It was born between tours in Ecuador, Colombia, and Mexico — pure chaos and non-stop intensity. You could say we went from ritual to mayhem. Both records are Devil’s Poison through and through, but this new one is more direct and unfiltered.

Do you have any funny or weird stories from your recordings or live shows to share with us?
Oh man, tons! The band is from the southernmost part of Chile — Patagonia. We've got mountains, snow, cold weather, no malls, no scene, no bullshit! We're the freaks in a town full of cows, lambs, and alcoholism. Once, we got invited to play in Santiago (the capital), and our drummer met his current girlfriend there — he never came back to Patagonia with us! Rock and love, haha. That same trip, Bestial Drinker and I had such a wild afterparty we missed our flight back home. We ended up partying for three more days in total chaos and tension! During the recording of Demo 2, we drank so much beer on a Sunday that one of us got fired from his job the next day — no regrets! While working on Street Metal Attack, we did the photoshoot, kept drinking that night, blasting underground metal, and got so drunk by 3 a.m. that we ended up in a drunken fight and broke up the band — temporarily of course, haha! And we have a lot more stories... some too wild to tell without getting cancelled!

What do you think about the rise of AI in music production?
It’s a double-edged sword. It can be useful for speeding up workflows, writing emails, whatever… but it will never replace the soul, filth, and danger of real musicians sweating in a rehearsal room or writing lyrics after a night in jail, with bruises on your face and 10 missed calls from one of your girls. Devil’s Poison is raw energy — and that can’t be faked by algorithms.

Based on your experience, what advice would you give to a new metal band? What should they avoid or focus on?
Don’t follow trends. Be true to your sound and your roots. Respect the underground. Play live as much as possible, record often, and don’t rely on others to move forward — do it yourself. And most importantly: listen to Devil’s Poison!

Do you see any differences between the metal scene in Chile and Europe (labels, bands, fans, etc.)?
Europe might have better infrastructure and tools. But in Chile, we have unmatched passion and intensity. Here, underground metal is lived, sweated, and bled. The DIY spirit in South America is strong — I’ve seen it in many countries. We're third-world, poor, or on the brink of chaos. No development, constant danger, violence, prostitution, drugs — all the fun stuff haha. Studios and venues? We barely have any. Everything is built from scratch. Personally, I love many European bands. I’d say both scenes are powerful — just in different ways.

What does METAL mean to you? And give us 10 metal albums that run in your veins.
Metal is the most expensive whore you’ll ever find in a brothel. Are you willing to pay the price? Here are 10 albums running through our veins:
Venom – Black Metal
Motörhead – Ace of Spades
Bathory – Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Destruction – Infernal Overkill
Hellhammer – Apocalyptic Raids
Sarcófago – INRI
Slaughter – Strappado
Midnight – Satanic Royalty
Running Wild – Gates to Purgatory
Whipstriker – Crude Rock’n’Roll

You've been an active band for nearly 10 years! Have there been any changes within the band or in the Chilean metal scene during that time?
Yes, we’ve grown a lot, gained some weight, lost some hair… but also gained experience and knowledge in the underground metal scene. We had a few lineup changes, especially on drums, but the current lineup is the same one that recorded all three full-lengths. The Chilean scene has evolved too. There are a lot of bands. Just like in many other countries — back in 2010, Black/Thrash was booming and everyone wanted to sound like Nocturnal. Now it's all about Death Metal, and there are thousands of bands popping up with the same sound. Let’s see how many of them survive in 5–10 years. But we do have great and serious acts like EJECUTOR, BLACK BEAST, FORCE OF DARKNESS, U.KULTEN, AMMIT, ATOMIC AGGRESSOR, HADES ARCHER, MISERYCORE, KRATHERION, HORRIFYING, and newer bands like SULPHURIC DEATH and LEX TALIONIS — highly recommended!

What can we expect from DEVIL’S POISON in the near future?
We're ready to spread our new album Sex and Metal across South America and beyond. New live shows are coming — next up is COLOMBIA in July 2025 with WHIPSTRIKER, where we’ll officially launch the new album. We just released a new live cassette via Rotten Leather, and there’s new merch on the way. Who knows — maybe we’ll pollute Europe/USA soon. We're also working on some surprises… Devil’s Poison is louder and more alive than ever!

Thank you very much for your time and keep up the good work! The last words are yours.
Thanks to you Stavros and FILTHY DOGS OF METAL for keeping the flame alive. To all maniacs out there: support the underground, raise your fist, and never stop headbanging. SEX AND METAL IS LAW! And remember these words: Your soul for the devil, your pussy for DEVIL’S POISON!
