Interview with COME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Welcome to the FILTHY DOGS OF METAL Webzine.

Tell us a few things about COME BACK FROM THE GRAVE (Members, Starting Year etc).
We are a galician death metal band, featuring Héctor López on guitar (Nashgul, Black Panda, Asedio...) and Marcos Pazo on drums (Cenopath, Sepulcro, Ekkaia...), which began as a studio project to unleash rotten and merciless death metal. The band formed in 2008, like an unnamed gravestone in an abandoned cemetery, and after a hiatus, but with some buried songs that had damaged their brains, they decided to reform the project in 2012 as a five-piece band. Some friends had wandered through the morbidity of the rehearsal until Paul Silva (vocals), Miguel Blanco (guitar), and Iago Pardo (bass) completed the lineup that remains today. At the end of 2014 we recorded our first demo, two tracks that would be the prelude to our first album, "The Coffin Earth's Entrails", 10 tracks of old school death metal released in 2015 by Black Seed Productions. In 2017, after a few live shows across the Spanish State, we recorded the EP “Caro Data Vermibus,” a four-track 10” vinyl release by Abstract Emotions and Mono Canibal, two independent Spanish labels, release on CD by Transcending Obscurity Records International, the same label that would continue to support us with the release of our second full-length album, “The Rise of the Blind Ones,” in 2020. After a hiatus of more than five years, initially due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequently due to several serious illnesses affecting some of the band members, Come Back from the Dead has returned to the studio with the intention of achieving total control over music, returning to roots and fully committed to self-management, self-release on the DIY way of everything related to our latest recording; “Ad Nauseam.”

You are going to release your EP ''Ad Nauseam''. Tell us a few things about this project.
New 12-inch, isa revolting blend of old-school death metal with a bunch of different influences. The band has resurrected, trying to create a catchy comeback changed the tuning from B to D which has allowed us to sharp our sound the most but at the same time give more presence to the bass, we think we've made the right choice because we have the feeling that the songs of “Ad Nauseam” demand repeated listens. The riffs sound sickeningly savage, eerily melodic and infectious, vicious, and so catchy. In short, we think “Ad Nauseam” maintains the glorious essence of Old School Death Metal, the feeling of death 'n' roll nuances, and the most forceful sound of the underground but, CBFTD is just death metal. The recording and mixing were done by Héctor, guitarist of CBFTD. You could say that this recording has its own perspective on how we want the band to sound. However, we achieved the final touch with the mastering handled by Magnus Lindberg at VRTKL Studio lab.

And what about the lyrics in “Ad Nauseam”?
The underlying theme of all our lyrics has a strong political charge. Despite constantly dealing with the subject of death, all the lyrics are social charged.

What do you prefer, Label or DIY and why?
“AD NAUSEAM” will be self-released digitally through the band's official Bandcamp page and on vinyl as a 12” with one side etched screen-printed at Camigraphic Lab (Santander), through the band's own label, COFFIN ENTRAILS SOUND, in collaboration with TAÛME RECORDS, a newly label created by one of the band members, which will handle management and distribution. So this time we run totally DIY. Total control on every decision.

Is there any funny or weird story from the recordings or from your live shows that you would like to share with us?
We don't really know it's funny or weird, maybe both, maybe neither, but it was totally new for us the way we recorded “Ad Nauseam”, we never played the songs together, we never practiced them, we just made the single guitar line and we recorded separately on dates totally differents, so it was a surprise for each of us to discover how the songs where being completed. Even the most of the arrangements where improvised just at the moment of the recording and on a vocal level, parts have even been written on the fly.

Your music style is Death Metal. Which are your main influences (Favourite Artists / Bands etc.)
When it comes to playing, composing, and having fun with CBFTD, perhaps our biggest influence is AUTOPSY, also  DEATH BREATH, REPUGNANT, REPULSION, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, classic bands of the genre...

Do you prefer Vinyl, Tape, CD or Digital Format and why is that?
We're all becoming more interested in physical formats, and vinyl in particular. The intention isn't to create something for collectors; the music remains paramount, and the goal is still for people to listen to it. The digital age makes the latter much easier, but it also makes everything incredibly ephemeral. Music is no longer experienced in the same way. Everything is too volatile these days, and music consumerism is voracious. It seems that the physical format sometimes helps us appreciate a more thoughtful, deliberate, and attentive listening experience.

Which things do you think a band should sacrifice in order to succeed? Have you ever sacrificed anything in your life for a better future for your band?
Well, we're not looking for success; we do this for fun, out of passion, and with great pleasure. It's true that it involves sacrifices, especially... Children and family.

Describe your ideal live show as a performance band. Have you already experienced that?
After more than 5 years of hiatus, it will be just the next gig. That will be true satisfaction, because it will mean many good things for several members of the band to be able to play live again.

What do you think about the rise of AI in music production?
We are analogic junks.

Based on your experience, what advice would you give to a new death metal band? What should they avoid or focus on?
For a band, playing live is essential, but perhaps it should be the newer bands who give us advice; we are very out of touch with how things work nowadays, especially in terms of technology and networks. We're too out of date to give any advice.

Tell us a few things about the New Underground Metal Scene in Spain (Bands, Fanzines, Webzines, Metal Clubs etc.)
We've been out of the "scene," at least on a personal level, for quite a few years... I'm finding it hard to catch up. Although it's not death metal, I've really enjoyed the latest albums from Todomal, Convulsions, Balmog, Inerth, and Nashgul.

What does Death Metal means to you? And give us 10 metal albums that run in your veins.
As we mentioned earlier, for CBFTD, just classics...
AUTOPSY – ALL, SLAYER – ALL, REPULSION – HORRIFIED, DEATH BREATH – STINK UP THE NIGHT, DEATH – LEPROSY... ALL, SEPULTURA – BENEATH THE REMAINS, MORBID ANGEL – ALTAR OF MADNESS, ENTOMBED – CLANDESTINE, REPUGNANT – EPITOME OF DARKNESS, DISMEMBER – ALL

Do you know anything about the Hellenic Metal Scene?
The truth is, we struggle to keep up with everything happening around us despite all the information available. I can say, though, that years ago I was completely hooked on Dead Congregation's *Promulgation of the Fall*. *Rotting Christ* is practically an institution in the genre...

What are your future plans?
We're still in the recovery phase... play, eat alive "until we're stuffed," and after that, everything will fall into place. The important thing now is that this new recording will be released on May 1, 2026, and from there we'll make decisions and see what comes up. We have a difficult road ahead since it seems everyone has forgotten about us, and we've decided to undertake this adventure entirely by self-producing and self-editing our work. We're not worried, but we'll make decisions as we go.

Thank you very much for your time & keep up the good work The closure is yours.
Thank you for your time and especially for your dedication and support. In that regard, I simply want to invite anyone who might see this message to listen to the band. This is about music, and if you enjoy it, all the better. Just share our bandcamp - https://comebackfromthedeadofficial.bandcamp.com/album/ad-nauseam
