Interview with NECRECTOMY

Tell us a few things about NECRECTOMY (Members, Starting Year etc).

All of our answers will be mainly provided by our drummer/vocalist Leo, since he is one of the founding members. The band was deformed into eXistenZ in 2016 by Leo and Vasily (Putrid Requiem). After the release of our debut EP "Interrupted Slumber", there was a tumultuos period with quite a few line-up changes. During this period, "Adoration of Devoration" and "Reincarnation" (Demigod cover that was released on Finnish Death Metal tribute compilation by Noxious Ruin label) were excreted in agony, since there was an amount of uncertainity. However, now we have a stable and complete line-up of Artem: Bass/Vocals, Arkadiy: Guitars, Max: Guitars, and Leo: Drums/Vocals. Recently we had our first tour and new EP "Pulverous Craniotomy" was released, which will be talked about in the next question.
You have recently released your EP ''Pulverous Craniotomy''. What is the feedback from your audience as well as from the press?
So far we had only positive response regarding the new EP. Some say this is the heaviest thing to come out from Necrectomy bowels, and the whole new era of the band is truly a new level, I would agree with both of these points.
The cover artwork has a gore atmosphere! Tell us a few things about it.
Oh it's quite gory for sure, mamma mia! Taylor Smith is a mad man behind this pile of sleaze. His dirty, raw style does appeal to our sound very well. He did work with a great band TORTURE RACK and did flyer for AUTOPSY show as well. Also a very easy person to work with.
And what about the lyrics?
Psychopathologic mutilations! There was also a touch of supernatural on the first EP, with kinda Frankenstein tale and trees sapping life from reanimated convulsing bodies. This new EP is based on deranged trepanation and lobotomy practices. "Pseudocystic Upheaval" is about re-arranging the brain matter to sell the enhanced version of it at the black market, and the "Pulverous Craniotomy" is about the insane pathologist who believes that excising certain parts of skull insides can erase the malicious thoughts and impulses of human species.
What do you prefer, Label or DIY and why?
In modern times, usually the band does the band-related things themselves, unless you are really huge. No one finances our studio recording or cover artists fee. Though, if someone would pay for a great studio, we wouldn't be against it! Lock us in the studio for a week and you will have a ripping album afterwards, you have my word on it. We do work with Reforestation Records, which is a great underground label now located in London. Jack is a true maniac and enthusiast, he does our tape releases and help with streaming services, which is plague of this era, but it's convenient to many. We do appreciate his help in all aspects. Nihil Productions and Noxious Ruin are also great and passionate labels with whom we had disgusted pleasure to work with. People like that are keeping underground flame alive!
Do you prefer Vinyl, Tape, CD or Digital Format and why is that?
Tape for the win! All of our releases were stillborn on tape prior to other formats. We are huge tape enthusiasts, and fans of demo tape era of death metal of 89-91 period especially, with certain aspects of aesthetics which is reflected in our tape layouts. Vinyl is cool too, our sick dream is to release 7" vinyl in tradition of those early Seraphic Decay/Adipocere Records/Gothic records style! Interested labels get in touch! The CD is technically best sounding format. Digital is a must for its convenience, and nothing to add here.
Your music style is Death Metal. Which are your main influences (Favourite Artists / Bands etc.)
Death metal is quite a wide specter, as you might guess there are many bands involved, however, in Necrectomy we do mainly explore Swedish and Finnish style, with refluxence of Xysma, Crematory, Nirvana 2002, Carnage, Demigod, Grave and Interment. The mighty British gore gods Carcass should be mentioned too!
Which things do you think a band should sacrifice in order to succeed? Have you ever sacrificed anything in your life for a better future for your band?
The word "sacrifice" is kinda too dramatic. You invest time, money and energy, however, the feeling of putting out new sick album, holding the copy of it and perforating through it alive is just satisfying to any musician or artist. Surely, the result is never 100% perfect, however, it leaves room for improvement, and we do know what should be fixed for the upcoming albums. DEADication to your music and persistence is all.
Describe your ideal live show as a performance band. Have you already experienced that?
Bassically, if we can hear ourselves among buzzsawing while spewing guts out, this is already an ideal.
What do you think about the rise of AI in music production?
AI in any production is like crutches for the disabled person. Once you do it, remember two things: 1) AI is an idiot genius at mediocrity, since it is the basis of it, and 2) No trust will be given to you in the future, since you are basically lying to your audience and treating them as fools, bearing that the only fool is AI user. And it's always shows. AI is unacceptable and goes against the whole point of creative work.
What attributes do you think that a new Death Metal Band should have in order to gain identity and be unique?
If you are not following particular bands to extend of almost copying, there always will be some personality in your craft, be it good or bad! As of now, there are bands that can not even copy, so their identity shows in a negative way. Overall, if the two guys play the same riff, it will still be different. Arkadiy says that nowadays many bands are adding elements which are out of place but doing it really bad, like overtechnical parts. The songwriting should be organic, and not with weird elements which are added just for the sake of having them. The music style should be felt in the fingers, in the atmosphere created and structures formed, your own patterns of tecnhique and personal sound design.
Do you believe that Digital Platforms help the new Death Metal Bands? Which, do you think, is the ideal way for a band to promote its work?
As said previously, in some way it's the plague, since many people do not try to find new music and keep feeding with automatic algorythms (which mainly suck), which really kills the thrill of searching for interesting bands, but in some way it is a blessing, since it is quite convenient to use while you are out there lurking on the street. We did put our swollen tunes to these services just so it will be available for listening disgust in any form of digestion preferred and automatic playlists suck.
From your experience in the music industry, what would you tell to a new Death Metal band to avoid or what to do?
Since there is an ongoing trend on death metal since around 2008, we can surely notice some people are trying to ride the hype wave to achieve some popularity. This has nothing in common with art, self-expression and self-exploration, which music should be. I would advise to avoid the silly attempts at fame and be honest with yourself and with your listener. The attempts of copying what is currently popular are pathetic. Stop it!
Tell us a few things about the New Underground Metal Scene in Saint Petersburg, Russia (Bands, Fanzines, Webzines, Metal Clubs etc.)
The scene is not too big, though it is the best and most diverse scene in Russia. We would recommend Catacomb Abscess, Caustic Vomit, Bitter Loss (R.I.P.) and Putrid Requiem! No fanzines at all. It would be great to have at least one though!
What does Death Metal means to you?
Death metal is a dark and powerful form of art and self-expression. We are attracted by these qualities.
Do you know anything about the Hellenic Metal Scene?
Our bass player töma was at the Suicidal Angels concert in 2016 in Saint-Petersburg and they slayed! He says that everything is very good about the Hellenic Thrash. Also, Inveracity is a great brutal death metal band.
What are your future plans?
A full-length album that will grind you into pulpy mass of offals! To add more gore and disorganize all the early catalogue, a compilation is incoming on Necroharmonic Productions (some Incantation/Mortician/Autopsy releases were made with this label), with all of our sticky stuff to date and two exclusive tracks! You will be able to find the title and more information on this album in the booklet of this forthcoming collection of excretions.
