SINISTER- THE UNBORN DEAD

Country: Netherlands
Year: 2014
Label: Helldprod/Murder Records

The Dutch veterans SINISTER are old-timers in the scene, a classic name in death metal who have given us intense and unforgettable moments through their rich and consistently active discography. I don’t think there’s much more I need to say about them, since (I’d like to believe) those of you reading these lines already know who they are. If, for whatever reason, you’re not familiar with SINISTER, stop reading this article right now and start digging into their discography. So what am I holding in my hands? The single “The Unborn Dead,” released in 2014 through the Portuguese label Helldprod Records (definitely check out their catalog, they have some seriously strong releases), in collaboration with my favorite label, Murder Records (Hail my necro-brother Danihell Slaughter!!!!) in a strictly limited run of only 250 copies. 150 copies on black vinyl and 100 on red vinyl (I’m very proud to own the red one!!!). This release came into my hands courtesy of my necro-brother Danihell. This 7” is a very interesting release featuring two cover songs. Side A includes “Ripped From The Cross” by the unfortunately forgotten Swedish death/black metal gods GROTESQUE. It’s performed flawlessly, tight, powerful, and executed exactly the way SINISTER know how to deliver. An excellent cover and an equally excellent song choice. Side B features “My Agony My Ecstasy” by the American doom/death metallers NOVEMBERS DOOM. I was never really a fan of NOVEMBERS DOOM, although their debut album ''Amid Its Hallowed Mirth'' made quite an impression back in 1995. This is an equally compelling cover, faithful to the original version, with the ethereal voice of Rebecca Duin on backing vocals making the final result even more beautiful. “The Unborn Dead” is a truly great release or rather, it was, considering that 12 years have already passed since then (wow… how fast do the years go? Like water!). I’m not sure whether it’s still available from the labels, so if you happen to come across a copy, I’d strongly suggest grabbing it with your eyes closed.
