FONDLECORPSE – FROM BEYOND THE CRYPT
Country: Netherlands
Year: 2005
Label: Posercrusher Records / Oakkingrecords
If you like your death metal dirty, heavy and full of rotten riffs, Fondlecorpse should be right up your alley. ''From Beyond The Crypt'' collects some of the band's early material, including their ''Limbless'' 7", the split 7" with Inkblack, rehearsal tracks and compilation appearances. 14 tracks in total, all coming from the early years of the band. Yes, yes, yes, I know it’s an old release! It’s been 21 years since it came out, but if a band is fucking awesome, there’s absolutely no reason not to give them some attention! My necro-brother Danihell Slaughter sent me their CD, and I have to thank him for introducing me to this fucking killer death metal band! The first thing you notice is the sound. This is not clean or modern death metal. The guitars are heavy and nasty, the drums hit hard and the vocals sound exactly the way they should on this kind of release. Tracks like “Bits And Pieces,” “Formaldehyde Soaked Corpses,” “Kingdom Of Rot” and “Into The Boglin Marshes” give you what you would expect from a band called Fondlecorpse. Short songs, heavy riffs, ugly vocals and plenty of gore. There is also a good amount of groove in the riffs, which keeps the songs from becoming just a wall of noise. “Forced Paradental Degeneration” is one of the shorter tracks, while “Fucked Stabbed And Eaten” and “Impregnating The Comatose” give you some of the more direct death metal moments on the release. The rehearsal tracks are a nice addition. “Fucked Stabbed And Eaten,” “Limbless,” “Razorback Attack” and “Into The Boglin Marshes” sound rougher and more primitive, but that actually works very well here. They give you a better idea of how the band sounded without the slightly better production of the main recordings. Rehearsals done in a fucked up practise room recorded with a lone microphone in 2003. What makes ''From Beyond The Crypt'' work is that the songs are simple but memorable. Fondlecorpse were not trying to play complicated death metal. They were going for heavy riffs, disgusting vocals and a good dose of gore, and they did that pretty well. The compilation can become a little repetitive towards the end, especially because most of the tracks follow the same basic approach. But honestly, that is not a big problem. This is the kind of CD you put on when you want some filthy old-school death metal and nothing more. The rehearsal tracks also add to the underground feeling of the whole release. They are rough, basic and exactly what you would expect from an old death metal rehearsal. And the cover artwork (as well as the overall aesthetic) is truly very gory, deathly, and blood-soaked. The horror movie samples ("Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer'', "Return Of The Living Dead", "Fallout" & "Razorback.") add to the whole atmosphere as well. ''From Beyond The Crypt'' is a solid collection of early Fondlecorpse material and a good example of the old Dutch death/gore-grind sound. Nothing fancy. Just riffs, guts, screams and rotten death metal.
