Interview with DISTASTE

We had a conversation with Lukas (Vocals/Lead Guitars). Enjoy!

Welcome to the FILTHY DOGS OF METAL Webzine.

Tell us a few things about DISTASTE (Members, Starting Year etc).
Distaste have been founded in 2000 and it’s current members are:
Armin: vox/rh git
Murz: bass
Yannick: drums
And myself, Lukas: vox/lead git

You have recently released your split EP with SICKRECY ''Man's The Leech / Oppressor: Salvatio''. What is the feedback from your audience as well as from the press?
If there has been feedback so far, it has not reached us yet.

The cover artwork has a sick atmosphere! Tell us a few things about it.
All our artworks are done by our own Armin, who is a coveted tattoo artist and has made numerous artworks for many bands. It goes along with our DIY attitude to have him handle all visual aesthetics himself.

And what about the lyrics?
Our lyrics are somewhat abstract and open for interpretion. Some verses are more obvious though. The lyrics on the split deal loosely with Human nature, religion and how much both of these suck.

What do you prefer, Label or DIY and why?
In terms of releasing our music we very much prefer having someone do it who knows more about it than we do (which is jack shit), so definitely Label. But when it comes to creating our vision, everything is DIY.

Is there any funny or weird story from the recordings or from your live shows that you would like to share with us?
Haha, i tend to forget these things pretty fast,as these are happening all the time so old memories are being replaced by new ones quickly, but I remember our drummer bringing a self built snare drum to the recordings, that was so deep, I could hardly fit a mic below it. It sounded stellar, though.

Do you prefer Vinyl, Tape, CD or Digital Format and why is that?
As a band we prefer physical, digital is handy, but without being able to sell physicals, we probably weren’t able to sustain the band.

Your music style is Deathgrind. Which are your main influences (Favourite Artists / Bands etc.)
Our influences range from European Grindcore like Nasum, Rotten Sound, Napalm Death to Swedish and American Death Metal (Dismember, Entombed, Deicide, Dying Fetus) to thrashy DM like Exhumed or Defleshed, straight up Thrash like Slayer, old Sepultura, some BM like Marduk or Naglfar, Crust like Wolfbrigade, Driller Killer and also some Sludge/Doom.

Which things do you think a band should sacrifice in order to succeed? Have you ever sacrificed anything in your life for a better future for your band?
Not really. This is supposed to be fun, all I sacrifice is time worse spent.

Describe your ideal live show as a performance band. Have you already experienced that?
We had a lot of very gratifying shows so far. To me personally a ''perfect''show would be playing with awesome bands that I enjoy listening to, a venue packed with people enjoying us and the others, having enough time to set up calmly and to hang out with the audience and the other bands, having fun together as bandmates.

What do you think about the rise of AI in music production?
It’s hard to tell…but from the experience I made with recent Technologies that emerged, I assume they will find a way to twist a technology that could potentially better everyone’s lives into another scourge of mankind, used solely to exploit humans even more.

What attributes do you think that a new Deathgrind Band should have in order to gain identity and be unique?
Good songs, good riffs, and the ability to perform them live.

Do you believe that Digital Platforms help the new Deathgrind Bands? Which, do you think, is the ideal way for a band to promote its work?
I do not think so.

From your experience in the music industry, what would you tell to a new Deathgrind band to avoid or what to do?
I would tell any band of any genre to avoid bandcontests. They are a scheme.

Tell us a few things about the New Underground Metal Scene in Austria (Bands, Fanzines, Webzines, Metal Clubs etc.)
Couple of really cool venues, like Rockhouse Salzburg, Kapu Linz, Wakuum Graz, all of them doing valuable underground-work! Bandwise the Austrian scene is mainly Black Metal and other Mainstream genres.

What does Deathgrind means to you? And give us 10 albums that run in your veins.
Deathgrind is a pretty narrow field, I will give you ten Death and Grind albums:
Deicide – Once Upon The Cross
Nasum – Shift
Suffocation – Despise the Sun
Rotten Sound – Murderworks
Nile – Annihilation of the Wicked
Afgrund – Svarta Dagar
Morbid Angel – Covenant
Gadget – The Funeral March
Dismember – Indecent and Obscene
And a deathgrind one:
Exhumed - Horror

Do you know anything about the Hellenic Metal Scene?
It’s huge! Lots of great bands, would love to play there one day!

What are your future plans?
We just finished our new full length album ''Agoniepositur'' which will be released in fall by FDA Records. Moreover we’ll be having a Mini-Tour to chimpy fest in London and a couple more fests and clubshows coming up, always looking for opportunities to tour.

Thank you very much for your time & keep up the good work! The closure is yours.
Thanks to Sickrecy for asking us to do this split together, it turned out great and we’re looking forward to sharing stages with you guys again!
