!!!VIOLENT THRASH METAL FROM ROMANIA!!!
We had a conversation with MK. Ultra (Drums). Enjoy!
Welcome to the FILTHY DOGS OF METAL Webzine.
Tell us a few things about CALAU (Members, Starting Year etc).
Hello MK.Ultra here. Me and Alcoholocausto had talked about starting a band last year and the idea started from listening to the band Pyoveli which means executioner in Finnish and we said that it would be fun to call are band Călău which means executioner in Romanian then me took Antimaniac as the bass player because he had a band with Alcoholocausto that led to nowhere so it was a logical decision.
You have recently released your EP ''Călău''. What is the feedback from your audience as well as from the press?
Well the feedback was pretty positive, from the press we don’t really know but we don’t really care either.
Label or DIY and why?
We are in a DIY label of a friend for now, we’re helping him start things because we want to grow the movement here and encourage other bands playing fast aggressive music.
Is there any funny or weird story from the recordings or from your live shows that you would like to share with us?
To be honest not really besides the fact that the release was made and are apartament and i am more the certain that are neighbours hate us haha.
Do you prefer Vinyl, Tape, CD or Digital Format and why is that?
Well he kinda prefer all kinds of music formats but it depends. I love Vinyl and tape but i also buy CDs and my band mates too are like that.
Your music style is Thrash Metal. Which are your main influences (Favourite Artists / Bands etc.)
Are influences are the early Teutonic and Brazilian scene like early Sodom, Kreator, Assassin, Violent Force, Minotaur, Sepultura, Sarcofago, Vulcano and some crossover like Cryptic Slaughter.
Which things do you think a band should sacrifice in order to succeed? Have you ever sacrificed anything in your life for a better future for your band?
Depends on what success means. If it means to be popular we don’t care that much but if it means to actually release the music that you want you need to take a lot of your time to dedicate yourself to actually manage to do the work till the end so one thing that you sacrifice is your remaining free time but it’s for a good cause after all.
Describe your ideal live show as a performance band. Have you already experienced that?
A small venue or someone’s basement full of people punching each-other and thrashing around. No we didn’t experience it but we will in the future.
What attributes do you think that a new Thrash Metal Band should have in order to gain identity and be unique?
Well the should have that punk attitude that even punk has lost, no clean robotic production that makes you sound like all of those shitty retro thrash bands around, no rockstar attitude, uniqueness doesn’t exist now but be as aggressive as possible and maybe play as chaotically fast and sloppy that you can. Just don’t try to sound clean and, yeah, maybe listen to all kinds of metal subgenres and music in general so you can have a wider pool of influences and stuff like that.
Do you believe that Digital Platforms help the new Thrash Metal Bands? Which, do you think, is the ideal way for a band to promote its work?
Ah yeah certainly. We don’t really know what other ways are the best because we’re at the beginning with this so we need to see.
Tell us a few things about the New Underground Metal Scene in Romania (Bands, Fanzines, Webzines, Metal Clubs etc.)
Well we have a handful of kickass bands like Rotheadș, Leather Brigade, Damage Case, Hellstrike, Slicer, Scyte, Ruyned, Satan’s Claw and Wrathhammer to name a few and for fanzinez we have Pagini din Criptă, StigOi and Moroii Fanzine.
Do you know anything about the Hellenic Metal Scene?
I can’t talk about my other bandmates even if i know they have a lot of knowledge in general but for me i know of course about the early Hellenic black metal scene with bands like Varathron, Rotting Christ of course, Necromantia and Zemial and some old school stuff like Flames, Sarissa, Vavel and some new bands here and there. Really good stuff in general!
What are your future plans?
Well we wanna do some live shows and the start writing for a new release in the future, this is all i’m gonna say for now.
Thank you very much for your time & keep up the good work! The closure is yours.
Thrash your fucking heads, listen to old school metal and spit on posers and rockstars. No future for rockers!
