!!!PRIMITIVE BLACK METAL FROM POLAND!!!
We had a conversation with Ketzer (Drums). Enjoy!
Welcome to the FILTHY DOGS OF METAL Webzine.
Tell us a few things about CADAVERIC POSSESSION (Members, Starting Year etc).
Hails! CADAVERIC POSSESSION consisted of 2 members throughout most of its history, Slav - the guitarist/vocalist and me, Ketzer - the drummer. The lineup has recently been complemented by Darkness- the bassist, so now it’s a trio. We started in 2017 and we released several materials since then, 3 full length albums, a demo, two split albums, an EP, ''Rhythmic Execration of Existence” will be the fourth
full length album. Our aim, since the beginning, was expressing ourselves through primitive Black/Death metal with some Mediterranean influences.
You are going to release your album ''Rhythmic Execration of Existence''. What can you share with us about this project?
I can say that it does not differ that much from the rest of our stuff, the sound might be different, the bass guitar lines might be more developed, but the fundamentals stayed the same. Primitive Black/Death Metal in the vein of PROFANATICA, BLASPHEMY, BEHERIT or BESTIAL WARLUST, intertwined with some riffs reminiscent of VARATHRON or NECROMANTIA. There is nothing particularly unique about this album, although the dosage of Greek influences might be bigger than usual.
The cover artwork has a dark atmosphere! Tell us a few things about it.
I really like it as well, but there is not much to tell. We, as a band, have given some vague suggestions to the artist and the artist brought these suggestions to life. It’s different from most of our covers, most of them are more similar to the works of Chris Moyen, thanks to the undeniable talent of Lord Kaos of NEKKROFUKK, who made those. We’ve got a regular painting for a cover now, so that’s new. I mean, we did use a fragment of a painting by Hieronim Bosch for the cover of the first album, but now we’ve got an entire painting created especially for this release.
And what about the lyrics?
Our lyrics convey various blasphemous and demonic matters. Some are about specific demonic entities, some are philosophical to a certain extent, some ponder the matter of death or eschatology and some are anti-judeochristian blasphemy.
How did your cooperation with Black Flame Rebellion occur? What do you prefer, Label or DIY and why?
Slav is friends with the maniac behind Black Flame Rebellion, that’s how this cooperation occured. I prefer the label option, most definitely, I had released some CD-R and tape demos in the past and it required much work, therefore releasing a regular album on my own would definitely exceed my strength and patience.
Is there any funny or weird story from the recordings or from your live shows that you would like to share with us?
One occurence comes to mind - each time we begin a recording session, some malevolent force tries to prevent us from successfully completing the session. Either there is a problem with the amplifier, or the double bass pedal refuses to work properly, stuff like this. Although, to be fair, nothing of the sort happened during the last session, maybe because it had been done in a semi-professional studio.
What are the differences between ''The Demise of King Yima'' and ''Rhythmic Execration of Existence''?
The sound is surely different, because of the different recording conditions. The bass guitar lines are more developed on ''Rhythmic Execration of Existence''... To be honest, I’m having trouble with finding the differences right now, partly because I haven’t listened to ''Rhythmic (...)'' for four months, and partly because these albums are not that different from each other to begin with.
Do you prefer Vinyl, Tape, CD or Digital Format and why is that?
CDs are what I have got the most of, so that’s my favorite format I guess. CD is more comfortable than vinyl, although nothing beats the proper analogue sound captured by vinyl. Tapes are all right I guess, they have their uses. I don’t consider ''Digital Format'' to be a thing, such releases don’t exist to me. I utterly hate listening to music online.
Your music style is Black Metal. Which are your main influences (Favourite Artists / Bands etc.)
I wouldn’t consider our style to be pure Black Metal, but whatever, it doesn’t matter. I have partly answered this question above, it was the answer to question 2, so again – we are influenced mainly by PROFANATICA, BLASPHEMY, BEHERIT, BESTIAL WARLUST, VARATHRON, NECROMANTIA. I’d add NECROVORE, SARCOFAGO, BOLT THROWER, CIANIDE and old MAYHEM. I think this list might represent our style.
Which things do you think a band should sacrifice in order to succeed? Have you ever sacrificed anything in your life for a better future for your band?
Succeeding is not something we care about, so I wouldn’t know. We are content with creating and spawning our hideous and cursed blasphemies, if anybody besides us digs them – that’s more than enough for us. As for the second question – I don’t think I have.
Describe your ideal live show as a performance band. Have you already experienced that?
We don’t play live and we don’t intend to.
What do you think about the rise of AI in music production?
I don’t consider this to be music at all, it is a simple matter. What AI is capable of is fascinating and baffling, impressive in many ways, but the results are not really worth listening to. The value of such ''music'' is equal to the value of the sounds produced by a hard drive or a printer. My approach is not entirely the same when it comes to visual artwork created by AI, I’m not a staunch supporter of that, but an AI image can be fitting in some cases, it can evoke an inhuman atmosphere of soullessness and emptiness.
What attributes do you think that a new Black Metal Band should have in order to gain identity and be unique?
I don’t think I know the answer to this question, I’m not concerned with being unique. We just play whatever the fuck comes to our minds, and the results are not really unique or original, although they sure are sincere and authentic. We might receive the answer to your question if we’d dissect the case of BOLZER from Switzerland, one of the few truly unique bands which have been created more or less
recently.
Do you believe that Digital Platforms help the new Black Metal Bands? Which, do you think, is the ideal way for a band to promote its work?
We are not present on such platforms, there are some promotional songs on youtube, but no Bandcamp or Spotify in our case. Sure, digital platforms can help certain bands spread their music, why not. I’d be a hypocrite if I had anything against online presence, since we are present on youtube, as I just said. I think that reviews and interviews in zines are the ideal way to promote a band.
From your experience in the music industry, what would you tell to a new black metal band to avoid or what to do?
I’ve got no experience in the music industry, I’ve got some experience in the Metal Underground, I’d say these are different things. Anyway, I don’t think there is a universal pattern common for every band, everybody has got to make their own mistakes and gain their own experiences.
Tell us a few things about the New Underground Metal Scene in Poland (Bands, Fanzines, Webzines, Metal Clubs etc.)
We’ve got many prolific labels releasing tight stuff, Under the Sign of Garazel, Putrid Cult, Godz ov War, Old Temple, to name a few. (And Black Flame Rebellion as well, obviously!) As for the bands, many come to my mind, MOLOCH LETALIS, INFERNAL WAR, VOIDHANGER, TEMPLE DESECRATION, THRONEUM, SZRON, VENEFICES, CULTES DES GHOULES, HELL’S CORONATION, ANIMA DAMNATA – I could go on, all of these are worthy of your attention. We’ve got many decent zines as well, R’Lyeh zine, Worship Him, Infernal Death, Cyrograf, Zły Demiurg, just to name a few. There is also an abundance of gigs one can go to, so I think there is nothing to complain about, the Polish UG is doing well.
What does Black Metal means to you? And give us 10 metal albums that run in your veins.
It’s an abyss I can sink in. It’s also an inspiration for everyday life, it’s many things, impossible to condense the answer in one or two sentences. Selecting 10 albums of all time is also impossible, the list might look different a month from now, but anyway – here goes:
1. BESTIAL MOCKERY – ''Gospel of the Insane''
2. BATHORY – ''The Return''
3. BLASPHEMY – ''Fallen Angel of Doom''
4. SARCOFAGO – ''I.N.R.I.''
5. SADISTIK EXEKUTION – ''The Magus''
6. BESTIAL WARLUST – ''Blood & Valour''
7. THRONEUM – ''Mutiny of Death''
8. ARCHGOAT – ''Whore of Betlehem''
9. CRAFT – ''Total Soul Rape''
10. DARKTHRONE – ''A Blaze in the Northern Sky''
Do you know anything about the Hellenic Metal Scene?
Actually, we are pretty fond of the Greek scene, I think that Slav among us is the biggest enthusiast of Greek metal. We like the unique, Greek approach to the sound of Black Metal, the style of VARATHRON, NECROMANTIA, old ROTTING CHRIST or old NIGHTFALL is exceptional. I value a lot of Greek bands besides that. I like RAVENCULT, SLAUGHTERED PRIEST, DREADFUL RELIC, NOCTURNAL VOMIT, ZEMIAL, KATACHTHON, NAER MATARON... And some others I don’t remember now.
What are your future plans?
Nothing groundbreaking, releasing an album I guess. We already have got a couple songs ready.
Thank you very much for your time & keep up the good work! The closure is yours.
Thank you for your support and for your questions! 666.
